Technical Standards & Quality Check: What to Inspect Before Buying Tiles

1. Water Absorption (The Real Test of Porcelain Quality)

High-quality porcelain tiles have ≤ 0.5% water absorption. Lower absorption means stronger tiles, better stain resistance, and perfect performance in bathrooms, kitchens, wet and outdoor areas.

✔ Ask for: ISO 10545-3 test report

2. Size Deviation (Perfect Fit, Perfect Finish)

Good tiles must be consistent in size. Premium rectified tiles follow strict tolerances so grout lines are clean and installation is seamless.

✔ Check the declared size (600×600mm / 600×1200mm)
✔ Select tiles from different boxes and compare

3. Tile Flatness & Warpage (No Lippage After Installation)

A flat tile ensures smooth installation. Warped or curved tiles create uneven surfaces and gaps.

✔ Place tiles on a flat surface
✔ Use a straight edge to check lippage before installation

4. Gloss Level (For GVT/PGVT Polished Tiles)

Gloss is measured in Gloss Units (GU). Higher GU means a brighter shine. This matters for luxury spaces like showrooms, hotels, homes, commercial projects.

✔ Ask for gloss meter reading (usually measured at 60°)

Final Tip: Don’t Skip the Technical Sheet

A good supplier always gives:

  • Water absorption %

  • Size & thickness tolerance

  • Flatness & warpage report

  • Gloss value

  • PEI/wear resistance

Better technical standards = stronger tiles = long-lasting projects.
